Game Selection
One of the most important ways to be a successful player
is playing in the right games. Game selection is the difference
between winning all your poker chips
and losing them. There is a big difference between walking
out a winner or explaining to your wife that your anniversary
trip to Rome is going to have to wait a while because daddy
lost his bankroll drawing to a three outer. So now that you
know how important game selection is, how do you go about
choosing the right game? First there are some questions that
you need to ask yourself. What type of game do you want to
play? No limit, pot limit, strait limit? Are you feeling the
need for constant action and excitement, or do you want to
grind our a few hundred at the $3/$6 table.
Table selection has much to do with what type of player you
are, whether you are tight, loose, super aggressive, or tight
aggressive. It is important that you try to observe your table
as much as you can in order to make “book” on
your competition. If you are playing online this is extremely
easy to do. Simply observe the play for a while before sitting
down and posting your blinds. If you are a tight player, try
and find a poker table that
has at least 50% of the players seeing a flop. This means
when you hit the nuts, you are almost guaranteed some action.
If you are a loose aggressive player, find a table that has
low participation in each hand, this way you can use your
aggression to bully your way to victory.
